How learning works at GOVS
Before you enroll, you should know exactly what you're signing up for. GOVS works differently than a traditional school - and differently than a lot of families expect. Here's the honest, plain-English version of how it all works.
GOVS is fully asynchronous, with no live classes
This is the most important thing to understand: GOVS has no live, required class times. You won't log into a video call at 9 a.m. with a teacher lecturing in real time.
Instead, your courses live on the Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) platform, and they're open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You move through your lessons on your own schedule - mornings, nights, weekends, whatever fits your life.
It's a real advantage for students who need flexibility. It also means there's no one sitting beside you setting the pace, which is why we're upfront about how it works before you start.
Here's what a typical GOVS day looks like
A GOVS day is simpler than you might think.
That's the rhythm. Repeat it, build a routine, and the credits add up.
Log in
Start by signing into your computer and heading to your VLA homepage.
Check announcements and messages
See what's new and read any notes from your teachers or coach.
Work your lessons
Move through your coursework, submitting units as you finish them.
Log your hours
Your time is tracked as you work, and you can add approved offline hours too.
Reach out when you're stuck
Message a teacher, book a tutor, or check in with your coach.
Plan for about 25 hours of school each week
Most students aim for roughly 25 hours of schoolwork a week - about five hours a day, five days a week - and complete at least one lesson per day. You're also expected to log in daily.
That's the minimum to stay on track. You can always work ahead, and many students do, finishing courses early and giving themselves breathing room down the stretch.

We'll be straight with you: the students who thrive at GOVS are the ones who can manage their own time.
With no bell schedule and no one watching the clock for you, the freedom only works if you take ownership of it. That means logging in consistently, keeping a routine, and reaching out when you need help instead of falling silent.
If self-direction isn't your strong suit yet, you're not out of luck - your coach, mentor, and tutors are here to help you build it. But going in with eyes open is the surest way to set yourself up to graduate.

Working independently doesn't mean working alone. Every GOVS student has a team:

certified teachers for every course, plus counseling and student services
Your first days are designed to set you up
You won't be dropped into coursework cold. Every new student begins with two short on-ramps:
- GOVS Success A and B - your first-day classes that orient you to the platform and walk you through how everything works.
- Virtual orientation - a guided introduction that gets you comfortable before the real coursework begins.
By the time you start your courses, you'll know how to log in, where to find things, and who to ask for help.
