A day in the life of a GOVS student
Wondering what this actually looks like day to day? Here's a walk through a typical GOVS day, start to finish, so you can picture yourself in it.
Start by logging in and checking what's new
Your day begins when you decide it does. When you're ready, sign into your computer and head to your VLA homepage.
First stop: announcements and messages. Read the daily announcements, jot down anything important, and check for new notes from your teachers or your academic coach. This is how you stay in the loop at a school without hallways.
Move through your lessons at your own pace
This is the heart of your day. Open your courses and start working through your units, submitting each one as you finish.
Most students complete at least one lesson a day and aim for around five hours of work, but the rhythm is yours to set. Focused and done by lunch? Great. Spread across the day between other responsibilities? That works too.
Track your time as you go
Your time is recorded as you work in VLA - that's your online seat time. Save your work often so every minute counts, especially if your connection drops.
You can also earn approved offline hours for things like reading, work, or testing, which is added to your account throughout the week. It all adds up towards your weekly attendance.

Reach out the moment you get stuck
You're never more than a message away from help. During your day, you can:
- Email a teacher with a question about a lesson
- Book free tutoring, online or in person at the Student Center
- Check in with your academic coach
- Drop by the Franklin Student Center to work alongside staff and other students
The students who ask for help early are the ones who keep moving.
Wrap up and set up tomorrow
When you're done, log out cleanly so your hours save properly. Take a quick look at where you are - how many units you have left, what's coming next - and you'll know exactly where to pick up tomorrow.
Build this routine, repeat it, and the credits add up to a diploma.
