Applications must be received in the GOVS office by noon on January 18, 2019.  Simply click on the link below, download the form, fill it out, and print.  Please note that you must also provide answers to the 3 questions on a separate sheet of paper: community activities, awards received, and your goals.

Last Chance For M.A.P. Testing! MAP Testing!

Students who have NOT completed their M.A.P. testing requirement will see a new class listed on their VLA homepage beginning Tuesday, December 18th entitled “GOVS MAP testing”.  All other classes will be locked until both math and reading portions of the M.A.P. test have been completed.   To complete M.A.P. testing, students will need to click on the class and follow the directions at the appropriate times.  M.A.P. testing sessions will last from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18th and Wednesday, December 19th.  If you would prefer to come to our facility in Lebanon to complete testing in person, the Conference Room at the Warren County Educational Service Center will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for any students who prefers to test at our facility rather than at home on the 18th and the 19th.  This is the last opportunity to take this State Mandated Test.  Again, all classes will be locked until the completion of M.A.P. testing.  Every student in grades 9 through 12 is required by law to participate in M.A.P. testing in both math and reading twice a year.  (Fall/Spring)

Thanksgiving Break Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Break for GOVS students will take place from Wednesday, November 21st through Friday, November 23rd.  This means students will only be required to complete 10 total hours for attendance this week.  Although the hour requirement for this week is reduced due to the holiday, breaks are often a good time to work ahead or catch up if necessary.  In addition, the GOVS office will be closed at 10:30am on 11/20 and will reopen on Monday, November 26th at 8:00 a.m. Have a wonderful holiday!

Who wants to see the turkeys?

Head over to our Facebook page to see the turkeys that our students (and teachers and parents too) colored for the first ever GOVS coloring contest!  Our FB page is at www.facebook.com/mygovs.  Or better yet, see our Facebook feed on the bottom left of this homepage (look for the blue capital F and click there to get to the page).

Attention 10th Graders! Vocational School Information Vocational School

Interested in learning in a hands-on environment? Preparing early for a career? Want to gain valuable workplace skills while still in high school? Below you will find information on local vocational school tours, open houses and applications. Open houses are available to all prospective students and their families, no appointment required.  In most cases, students would attend the vocational school associated with the district in which they are currently living. Aside from attending a vocational school full-time, many schools allow GOVS students to choose a half-day option where they would continue to complete academic coursework online and participate in career-based education.  Contact Mrs. Wall for assistance identifying which school applies to you or with any other questions.

Tutoring lab canceled for today, Thursday November 15

Because the Alternative School is closed today due to the inclement weather, there will be no GOVS tutoring lab.  The last lab before Thanksgiving break is next Monday here at the GOVS office.

Attention Juniors and Seniors! State End-of-Course Testing Information Test

Assigned tests have now been posted to the test schedule page and sent out through One Call Now.  You may search for your recommended tests, if any,  at http://www.mygovs.com/Content2/TestInfo, using your 4-digit student ID number.

You will NOT be assigned a specific day/time/location to test.  You may pick the session that works best for your schedule and view your options by visiting the test schedule page (linked above) or by clicking on "...Read More" below.  Plan to arrive 15 minutes before the session begins.  PLEASE BRING YOUR GOVS ID TO TESTING.

New Offline Hours Classes Clarification Attention

With the Addition of the Independent Reading Class and the Testing Class there have been a few questions from students and parents.  Here are some answers!

1.  These two classes are NOT required and are NOT graded.  They were simply created to help students gain additional offline hours toward their weekly attendance requirement of 25 hours.

2.  We realize that each student’s “Number of Units Assigned” total went up due to the addition of these new classes.  We are working to fix that technical issue but please be aware that you are not required to complete those units.

Need Hours? Two New Offline Hours Classes Can Help! Read!

Two new “Offline Hours” classes have been added to every student’s schedule this week.  There are no grades or credit for these classes as they are simply there to offer students an opportunity to gain more hours toward their attendance requirement of 25 hours per week.  These classes are entitled Testing Hours and Independent Reading.  These are NOT required classes and just opportunities for students to accumulate more hours!

Tutoring Now Available! Tutoring

Tutoring is available at no charge by request from students and/or parents. Tutoring is available through remote tutoring using Google Hangout or face-to-face tutoring in the GOVS offices or a public space such as a library. Tutoring is limited to 5 hours per student per week. Anything above 5 hours per student per week requires approval from the director of GOVS.  If you would like a tutor, please visit our website at www.mygovs.com and click on the Tutor Request link up top.  It will take you to a Google form where you can request tutoring.  Please note: a parent must sign you up for tutoring unless you are 18 and on your own. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Chuck Merk, GOVS Outreach Coordinator, at chuck.merk@mygovs.com.

Do you have questions about your hours not adding up correctly? Description Box

If so, here are some reminders, tips, and explanations that might help you to understand the changes implemented this year!

1.  Save, Save, Save!!!  There is still an automatic log out after 45 mins of inactivity but you must SAVE periodically to avoid the log out.  Saving frequently is the only way to assure you don’t lose your work OR your hours!

2.  You can’t accumulate hours on your student home page.  You must be in one of your lessons in order to accumulate online hours.

3.  Online and offline hours can’t overlap!  You can’t claim offline hours during a time that you were logged into VLA working on a lesson.  For instance, if you were logged into VLA working on a lesson from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., you can’t claim offline hours between those times!  Offline hours can only be approved for completing work while NOT logged into VLA.

4.  When claiming your offline activities, please use the “Description” box to describe the activity that you would like to receive credit for completing.  The hours will not be approved unless there is a description of the activity in the “Description” box.  The more detailed description of the activity, the better!

5.  You may not accumulate more than 10 hours of combined online and offline hours per day.

Important Information Concerning Greater Ohio Virtual School Documentation Procedures Attention!

Participation at the Greater Ohio Virtual School is defined by accumulating a minimum of 25 hours of combined on-line and off-line hours per week documented by the Virtual Learning Academy Curriculum Program while completing a minimum of 5 lessons per week to accumulate the appropriate amount of credits towards a diploma.  The Greater Ohio Virtual School Week runs from Monday through Sunday evening.  Per state law, students enrolled in electronic schools are only permitted to complete a maximum of 10 hours per day of combined online and offline hours and may accumulate hours 7 days a week and 24 hours a day.  Please click the "Read More" link below to review the entire policy!

Time To Submit Your Non-Classroom Learning Opportunities Forms! Reminder!

If you have filled out any Non-Classroom Learning Opportunities Forms over the past few weeks, it is time to find the “Finalize-warning this completes the form all entries are final” icon at the bottom of the form.  Once you click on this button it will send the form to the GOVS office for approval and documentation.  Remember, we will do this at the end of each month so look for another notification around February 28th!  There are a few changes to the form for the month of February.

  1. When you click on the Non-Classroom Learning Opportunities Link in VLA it will no longer take you to a page with all of the classes listed.  Now, it will take you directly to the form and your class will be listed in a drop down menu.  Everything else will work the same as before.
  2. When you select “Other Non-Classroom Learning Opportunities” on the form, you will now be required to give a brief description of those opportunities.

We will be adjusting the form from month to month in an effort to make it easier to use. We want to stress the importance of taking these forms seriously and completing each form honestly.  The future funding of the Greater Ohio Virtual School depends on our ability to successfully collect both Seat Time AND Non-Classroom Learning Opportunities!

“Time Spent Today” calculator added to Student Home Page! Time Spent Today

In an effort to help students keep track of the new five-hour log in requirement, we have added a helpful calculator to each student homepage.   As a reminder, each student is required to log in and work on his or her classes for a total of five hours per day.  Located near the top of the page, you can now find a “Time Spent Today” icon that will display the total number of accumulated hours and minutes.  Again, this doesn’t have to be 5 consecutive hours per day, as it will automatically keep track and add hours and minutes each time the student logs on and completes work throughout the day.  Additionally, we would like to remind all students to save their progress as they are working, as the program will automatically log students out after 90 minutes of inactivity.  Please remember that this five-hour log in requirement is very important to the funding of our school now and in the future!
